Professional experience
Dr. Aleksey Sheshukov is a professor of biological and agricultural engineering and Graduate Program Director. He earned a master’s degree with honors in applied mathematics and theoretical mechanics and a doctorate in fluid mechanics from Kazan State University, where he studied multiphase flow and solute transport in frozen porous media. After graduation, Sheshukov joined the Kazan State Power Engineering University as an Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean, where he taught courses on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mass transport. From 1999 to 2007, he was a visiting assistant professor and later a research associate at the University of Minnesota focusing on analytical and numerical modeling of gravity-driven unstable flows in unsaturated soils. In 2008, he joined Kansas State University as a watershed modeling specialist and later Assistant Professor, where he leads research and extension programs on watershed hydrology and water quality.
Research
Sheshukov’s research interests include studying fundamentals of hydrological processes, sustainable watershed management, and physically based modeling of flow, heat, and mass transport in terrestrial ecosystems. His research group employs a range of watershed modeling tools, develops novel computer models, and conducts field experiments. Specific interests include surface processes, soil erosion, crop water use and efficiency, and cold region hydrology. His research is closely integrated with extension programs and activities aimed at supporting and engaging citizens in conserving and protecting Kansas watersheds. He organizes demonstration days and workshops on water quality and GIS for extension agents.
Academic highlights
Sheshukov was a recipient of the ASABE Superior Paper Award (2012), Big XII Faculty Fellowship Award (2015), and the Larry E. and Laurel Erickson Public Service Award by the College of Engineering (2020). He co-chaired the S1089 Multistate Research Project team, a national runner-up for the 2025 AgInnovation Excellence in Multistate Research Award from USDA-NIFA. Graduate students in his research group have earned awards at the Governor’s Conference on the Future of Water in Kansas, from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, the Fulbright Program, and the Vietnam Education Foundation. Sheshukov is the state lead of the Daily Erosion Project.
